Iran Vows to Destroy OpenAI's $30B Stargate Data Center in UAE

Iran's IRGC threatens to annihilate OpenAI's massive Stargate AI data center in Abu Dhabi if the US attacks Iran's power plants, according to reports.
Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has published a video threatening OpenAI's planned Abu Dhabi datacenter if the US follows through on threats to attack the country's power plants, as reported earlier by Tom's Hardware. The video, which was published to an Iranian state-backed news outlet's X account on April 3rd, says the IRGC will carry out the "complete and utter annihilation" of US-linked energy and technology companies in the region, before showing an image of OpenAI's $30 billion in-progress Stargate facility in the United Arab Emirates.
The IRGC's threat comes amid rising tensions between Iran and the US, with the Iranian regime accusing the US of planning attacks on its power infrastructure. OpenAI's Stargate project, a massive 1 gigawatt AI data center, is seen as a strategic asset for the UAE and its US-allied partners, making it a potential target for Iranian retaliation.
The Stargate facility is a key part of the UAE's broader ambitions to become a global AI and technology hub, with the government investing heavily in advanced computing infrastructure and AI research and development. The data center is designed to support OpenAI's growing suite of AI models and services, including the popular ChatGPT chatbot.
Iran's IRGC has a history of making bold threats against US-linked interests in the region, though the extent to which they would actually carry out an attack on the Stargate facility remains uncertain. The UAE has invested heavily in air defense systems and cybersecurity measures to protect critical infrastructure from potential attacks.
Nonetheless, the IRGC's threat serves as a stark reminder of the geopolitical risks facing major technology and energy projects in the Middle East, particularly those with strong ties to the US and its regional allies. OpenAI and the UAE will likely need to bolster security and contingency planning to mitigate the potential fallout from such inflammatory rhetoric.
