Judge Battles to Refund $175B in Illegal Trump Tariffs

US judge and government lawyers meet to devise plan for refunding up to $175 billion in tariffs collected unlawfully from over 300,000 importers during Trump's trade war.
A US judge is set to meet with government lawyers to determine how to refund up to $175 billion in tariffs that were illegally collected from more than 300,000 importers during the Trump administration's trade war. Judge Richard Eaton of the US Court of International Trade will hear from lawyers for the customs agency responsible for overseeing these repayments on Friday, according to a Reuters report.
Last month, the Supreme Court ruled that the 1977 law used by the Trump administration to justify its global tariffs did not actually provide legal justification for most of these trade war tariffs. This landmark decision paves the way for importers to recoup the billions they were forced to pay in these unlawful levies.
