Lone NJ Lawmaker's Fight to Uphold Congress's Authority

A Democratic Congressman from New Jersey is taking on a legal battle to defend Congress's investigative powers, despite facing an uphill battle against the executive branch.
Representative LaMonica McIver, a Democrat from New Jersey, is waging a lonely legal fight to test the extent of Congress's investigative powers. In a rare move, McIver has filed a lawsuit in his individual capacity, seeking to compel testimony from a former Trump administration official who has refused to cooperate with a House committee investigation.
McIver's legal challenge comes at a time of heightened tensions between the legislative and executive branches, with the White House often resisting congressional oversight efforts. The lawsuit represents an attempt by a single lawmaker to assert Congress's authority and push back against what he sees as an overreach of executive privilege.
The case centers around Ethan Kingsley, a former deputy assistant secretary at the Department of Energy, who was subpoenaed by the House Oversight and Reform Committee to testify about the Trump administration's decision to withhold certain energy efficiency standards. Kingsley, however, has refused to appear, citing executive privilege.
