Major Earthquake Triggers Tsunami Warning for Northern Japan

7.5 magnitude quake off Sanriku coast prompts evacuations as authorities brace for large waves in Iwate, Aomori and Hokkaido prefectures
A powerful 7.5 magnitude earthquake has struck off the northern coast of Japan, triggering a tsunami warning for affected areas. The quake occurred in the Pacific Ocean near the Sanriku region, a section of coastline that was devastated by the massive 2011 tsunami that followed a massive 9.0 earthquake.
According to authorities, the biggest waves from this latest tsunami are expected in Iwate, Aomori and Hokkaido prefectures. Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi said the government has set up an emergency task force and is urging residents in the affected areas to evacuate to safety as soon as possible.
