NSW Loses Big as WA Scores $5.5Bn GST Windfall

In a move that has angered the New South Wales government, the Commonwealth Grants Commission has unveiled its recommendations for the 2026-27 distribution of the projected $102.5 billion in goods and services tax (GST) revenue. The big winner in this latest carve-up is Western Australia, which is set to receive an extra $5.5 billion thanks to a sweetheart deal struck with the federal government in 2018.
The NSW Premier has lashed out at the new distribution calculation, calling it unfair and past its use-by date. The state is emerging as the main loser in the latest GST allocation, with its share of the revenue set to decrease relative to its population.
