Outrage Erupts as Swifts Lose Ancestral Nests in Derbyshire Rail Upgrade

Conservationists express fury as refurbishment of a railway viaduct in Derbyshire blocks access to swifts' historic nesting sites, endangering the birds.
Conservationists are expressing outrage after a railway refurbishment in Derbyshire blocked access to nesting sites used by swifts for generations. The £7.5 million upgrade of the Chapel Milton viaduct on the edge of the Peak District has sealed off at least nine swift nesting holes, leaving the birds unable to return to their ancestral homes.
Nature lovers had pleaded with Network Rail to preserve three of the nesting sites, but their appeals were ignored. Swifts are migratory birds that travel from Africa each spring to breed in the UK, often utilizing the same nest sites year after year. The blocked-off viaduct holes were among the swifts' primary nesting locations in the area.
