Japan was rocked by a powerful 7.4-magnitude earthquake off its northern coast, triggering a tsunami alert and urgent calls for residents to evacuate low-lying coastal areas.
The quake struck in the Pacific Ocean about 60 kilometers (37 miles) east of Ishinomaki city in Iwate prefecture, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency. The tremors could be felt as far south as Tokyo, some 400 kilometers (250 miles) away from the epicenter.
Authorities immediately issued a tsunami warning for the coastlines of Iwate, Miyagi and Fukushima prefectures, cautioning that waves up to 1 meter (3.3 feet) high could hit the region. Residents were advised to evacuate to higher ground as a precaution.
