Protecting Public Safety: Martyn's Law's First Year Anniversary

Explore the impact of Martyn's Law, a landmark legislation aimed at enhancing public safety, as the UK marks its first year since receiving Royal Assent.
As the UK marks the first anniversary of the Royal Assent for Martyn's Law, a landmark piece of legislation aimed at enhancing public safety, the SIA Martyn's Law Director Laura Gibb takes a moment to reflect on the progress made and the road ahead.
Martyn's Law, named after Martyn Hett, who tragically lost his life in the 2017 Manchester Arena attack, represents a significant step forward in the country's efforts to protect its citizens from the threat of terrorism. The law, which received Royal Assent in April 2022, requires certain public venues and local authorities to implement comprehensive security measures, ensuring that the safety of the public remains a top priority.
In the past year, Gibb and her team have been working tirelessly to lay the groundwork for the effective implementation of Martyn's Law. This includes the development of draft section 12 guidance, which will be published for public consultation in the coming weeks.
The guidance, which will provide a roadmap for local authorities and venue operators, is designed to ensure a consistent and effective approach to security measures across the country. This includes requirements for risk assessments, security plans, and staff training, among other critical elements.
As Gibb reflects on the past year, she acknowledges the importance of maintaining a sense of urgency and purpose in the ongoing efforts to protect the public.
