Rising Conservative Star JD Vance Emerges as 2028 Favorite at CPAC

In a surprise result, Ohio Senator JD Vance topped the CPAC straw poll for the 2028 GOP presidential nomination, outpacing Secretary of State Marco Rubio and other potential contenders.
In a surprise result at the annual Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC), Ohio Senator JD Vance emerged as the top choice for the Republican presidential nomination in 2028. The CPAC straw poll, an informal survey of conference attendees, saw Vance edge out Secretary of State Marco Rubio and other potential GOP contenders.
Vance, a first-term Senator and rising star in the conservative movement, has positioned himself as a fierce critic of the Republican establishment and a champion of populist, America First policies. His 2016 bestseller "Hillbilly Elegy" and his subsequent political career have made him a darling of the party's nationalist wing.
Rubio, a more seasoned and establishment-aligned Republican, has also seen his stature grow in recent years, particularly after serving as Secretary of State under the Trump administration. However, Vance's ability to connect with the party's grassroots base appears to have given him the edge in the CPAC straw poll.
"The results show that the Republican base is hungry for a new generation of leadership that will fight for their values and interests," said Carly Shanahan, a political analyst at the conservative think tank Heritage Foundation. "Vance has tapped into that sentiment in a way that Rubio and others have struggled to match."
While the CPAC straw poll is not a definitive predictor of future election outcomes, it does provide a snapshot of the current mood within the Republican Party. With Trump's continued influence and the party's shift toward populism, Vance's victory suggests he could be a formidable contender for the 2028 nomination, should he choose to run.
"Vance's win shows that the Republican base is looking for a fighter, someone who will take the fight to the left and not back down," said Brian Darling, a former Senate aide and conservative commentator. "If he decides to run, he'll be a force to be reckoned with."
The 2028 election cycle is still several years away, and the political landscape could shift dramatically in the meantime. However, Vance's strong showing at CPAC has undoubtedly put him on the radar of Republican voters and party strategists alike.
