South African Town Embroiled in Racial Tensions Over Name Change

Debate over renaming Graaff-Reinet to honor anti-apartheid activist Robert Sobukwe has divided residents and sparked petitions, protests, and legal action.
A once-quiet South African town has erupted into a heated debate over changing its colonial-era name, Graaff-Reinet, to honor the legacy of anti-apartheid activist Robert Sobukwe. The decision by the country's sports, arts and culture minister, Gayton McKenzie, to approve the name change on February 6th has stirred up racial tensions and divided the town's residents.
Petitions have been signed, rival marches held, and a formal letter of complaint sent to the minister in response to the proposed name change. The debate has pitted those who see it as a long-overdue recognition of Sobukwe's crucial role in the fight against apartheid against those who view it as an erasure of the town's colonial-era identity.
