Standing with My Palestinian Sister: A Firsthand Account from ICE Detention

Mahmoud Khalil, a Palestinian activist, reflects on his own experience in ICE detention and shares a powerful letter to his friend Leqaa Kordia, who remains imprisoned for speaking the truth about Palestine.
One year ago, I, Mahmoud Khalil, was arrested by ICE for peacefully protesting in support of Palestine. As I reflect on my own harrowing experience, I am reminded of my dear friend Leqaa Kordia, who remains caged for also daring to speak the truth about the injustices faced by the Palestinian people.
Leqaa, my sister, I write to you from a place of solidarity and unwavering support. Like me, you have stood up for the rights of our people, and for that, you have been unjustly imprisoned by a system that seeks to silence our voices. But I want you to know that you are not alone. Your fight is my fight, and I will carry you until you are free.
During my own time in ICE detention, I witnessed firsthand the inhumane conditions and the blatant disregard for the basic human rights of those who dare to challenge the status quo. The cold, sterile cells, the constant surveillance, the lack of access to adequate healthcare – these are the realities that you and so many others face every day, simply for having the courage to speak up.
