Taiwan Faces Pressure to Boost Military Amid China's Rising Threat

U.S. senators urge Taiwan to increase defense spending as tensions with China escalate, highlighting Washington's concerns over the growing cross-strait military imbalance.
In a move that underscores the growing geopolitical tensions in the Taiwan Strait, a delegation of four U.S. senators recently visited Taiwan and pressed the island nation to boost its military spending in the face of an increasingly assertive China.
The bipartisan group, which included Senators Tammy Duckworth, Chris Coons, and Dan Sullivan, met with Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen and other top officials during their trip. Their message was clear: Taiwan needs to break an impasse over a proposed $40 billion budget for defense, which has faced resistance from some lawmakers in Taipei.
