Texas lawmakers from both parties criticize ICE for detaining two teenage brothers who were part of a high school mariachi group honored by Congress last year.
Texas lawmakers from both political parties have harshly criticized U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) for detaining two teenage brothers who were members of a high school mariachi ensemble honored by Congress just last year. The case has drawn national attention, shining a light on the challenges faced by young immigrants pursuing their musical passions in the United States.
The two brothers, Antonio Yesayahu Gámez-Cuéllar, 18, and Caleb Gámez-Cuéllar, 14, were part of the award-winning Mariachi Ono ensemble from their Texas high school. In 2022, the group won a state mariachi competition, earning them an invitation to perform on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives. Their congresswoman, Monica De La Cruz, celebrated their accomplishment, showcasing the brothers' talents to the nation.
