Trump's Iran Policy: Unintended Consequences of Intervention

Examining how well-meaning calls for Trump administration intervention in Iran led to unforeseen outcomes and escalation of tensions.
The death toll from the protests in Iran was rising in January, and Iranian expatriates around the world were urgently calling for the Trump administration to intervene. Their good intentions, however, ultimately helped pave the road to escalating tensions and conflict with Iran.
In the wake of the protests, many Iranians living abroad were desperate to see the US government take action to support the anti-government movement. They believed that American intervention could tip the scales and help the protesters succeed in toppling the Iranian regime.
The Trump administration, eager to be seen as tough on Iran, responded to these calls by ramping up economic sanctions and rhetorical pressure on the Iranian government. This hardline approach was intended to weaken the regime and embolden the protesters, but it ultimately backfired.
