Trump Seeks Europe's Aid in Confronting Iran: Examining the Diplomatic Tension

Former French Ambassador to the US Gerard Araud weighs in on the growing tensions between the US, Israel, and Iran, and why Europe is hesitant to join the fight.
As the Trump administration ratchets up its confrontation with Iran, the President has called on European allies to join the fight. Former French Ambassador to the US Gerard Araud argues that Europe is right to avoid being drawn into a new war in the Middle East.
Araud, who served as France's top diplomat in Washington from 2014 to 2019, says the US and Israel are overplaying their hand and underestimating Iran's capabilities. He believes Europe should maintain its distance from the looming conflict, even as the Trump administration applies more economic and diplomatic pressure on Tehran.
The Trump administration has taken a hardline stance against Iran, withdrawing from the 2015 nuclear deal and imposing crippling sanctions. The US has also sent additional troops to the Middle East and carried out cyberattacks against Iran in response to recent tanker attacks in the Persian Gulf.
Araud says Europe is right to be wary of joining the US-led effort, warning that a military confrontation with Iran could quickly spiral out of control.
