UK Government to Relinquish Control Over Election Watchdog

Labour moves to repeal Tory-imposed powers that allowed government influence over the Electoral Commission, addressing concerns of democratic abuse.
In a move to protect the independence of the UK's electoral watchdog, the Labour government has announced plans to repeal powers that previously allowed the ruling party to exert influence over the Electoral Commission. The decision comes after warnings from MPs and campaigners that the law imposed by the Conservatives could be used by future leaders to undermine democracy.
Steve Reed, the Communities Secretary overseeing a new elections bill, told MPs that the government would fully repeal the power for the government to impose a strategy and policy statement on the Electoral Commission. This move is aimed at safeguarding the independence and impartiality of the body responsible for overseeing UK elections.
