As the United States has experienced a dramatic decline in its birthrate in recent years, the consequences are being felt across the country, with many school districts being forced to close down schools due to dwindling enrollment. At a February board meeting for Memphis-Shelby County Schools in Tennessee, a parent of five children who currently or formerly attended Ida B. Wells Academy, an alternative education school, questioned the decision to close the high-performing institution.
