US States Challenge Trump's Unlawful Tariff Hike

Coalition of Democratic AGs and governors sue to block new 15% tariffs, calling them 'illegal and reckless' as Trump lacks authority to impose levies.
A coalition of Democratic attorneys general and governors from 24 US states are suing Donald Trump in a bid to block his latest round of tariffs. The lawsuit claims the president does not have the authority to unilaterally impose these new trade levies, which the White House plans to enact as a 15% tariff on all imports.
This legal challenge comes after the Supreme Court recently declared Trump's previous "liberation day" tariffs illegal, dealing a major blow to the president's trade agenda. While the new 15% tariffs have not yet gone into effect, the White House has stated they will begin this week.

The states filing the lawsuit argue that Trump's actions are "illegal and reckless," overstepping the bounds of presidential power and disrupting state economies that rely on trade. They are demanding the federal government provide refunds for any tariffs already collected.
"The president does not have the authority to unilaterally impose these types of sweeping tariffs," said New York Attorney General Letitia James, who is leading the coalition. "By filing this lawsuit, we are standing up for the rule of law and protecting our states' economies from the president's reckless behavior."
The lawsuit comes as businesses and consumers nationwide continue to grapple with the impacts of Trump's trade war, which has driven up costs, disrupted supply chains, and threatened American jobs. Despite the economic pain, the president has remained steadfast in his protectionist policies, even as his authority to impose tariffs faces growing legal challenges.
"We will not let the president abuse his power and violate the Constitution in pursuit of his personal political agenda," said California Attorney General Xavier Becerra. "This unlawful tariff hike will hurt families, farmers, businesses and workers across the country."
The high-stakes legal battle over Trump's trade policies is expected to have far-reaching implications, not just for the US economy, but for the balance of power between the executive and legislative branches. As the president continues to push the boundaries of his authority, state leaders are stepping up to check his agenda through the courts.
