Youth Joblessness in UK Nears 1 Million as Generational Divide Widens

New ONS data shows the number of young Britons not in work or education has risen to 957,000, with a concerning increase among young women. Experts warn that societal progress is being undermined.
The latest figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) reveal a troubling trend in the UK, as the number of young people aged 16-24 who are not in employment, education or training (NEET) has risen closer to the 1 million mark. The data shows that the NEET population grew to 957,000 in the final quarter of last year, equating to 12.8% of this age group.
The rise, driven primarily by an increase among young women, has prompted concerns from government advisers that the expectation of each generation doing better than the last is now being broken. This suggests a worrying generational divide and a potential long-term threat to social mobility and economic prosperity.
